ISDN Configuration for Xandros Desktop

Description: There are several sets of steps in order to install, configure and start ISDN connections on Xandros Desktop. All of the steps for installing ISDN packages must be completed before commencing any of the configuration steps.

Note: the following is a list of the required ISDN packages:

  1. conf-isdn-account_1.6-1_all.deb
  2. ipppd_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  3. isdnlog_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  4. isdnlog-data_3.1pre4-4_all.deb
  5. isdnutils_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  6. isdnutils-base_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  7. isdnutils-xtools_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  8. isdnvboxclient_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  9. isdnvboxserver_3.1pre4-4_i386.deb
  10. sox_12.17.3-3_i386.deb

Downloading the required ISDN packages steps:

  1. Using a computer connected to the Internet, create a folder, which will be used to save all of the required downloaded packages
  2. Open a Web browser
  3. Type "http://support.xandros.com/downloads/isdn" in the Address field (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  4. To download each ".deb" file, click a ".deb" file
  5. The File download dialog will appear, click Save
  6. In the Save As dialog, click the folder where you wish save the files and click Save
  7. Repeat the previous 3 steps until all of the files have been downloaded
  8. Once all of the files are downloaded, transfer the file to your computer running Xandros Desktop. (refer to the "Installing ISDN packages" steps for details)

Installing ISDN packages.

  1. Log on to your computer running Xandros Desktop as Administrator (root)
  2. Create a folder, named isdn, on the desktop
  3. Transfer the ".deb" files download to the folder, named isdn, on the desktop created in the previous step
  4. Select Launch | Applications | System | Console
  5. Type "cd /root/Desktop/isdn" and press Enter
  6. Type "dpkg -i *.deb" and press Enter
  7. When prompted with "Does firmware need to be loaded?" in the Configuring Isdnutils-base dialog, choose the default "none" and press Enter; unless your ISDN card requires firmware (for example: Sedlbauer SpeedFax+ PCI or Siemens I-Surf need ISAR.BIN loaded)
  8. When prompted with "What number should vbox answer?" in the Configuring Isdnvboxserver dialog, choose the default "quit" or leave it blank and press Enter
  9. When prompted with "What is your ISP's phone number?", in the Configuring Ippd dialog, choose the default "manual" or leave it blank and press Enter
  10. When the presented with the first Configuring Isdnlog dialog, use the arrow keys to scroll down to read the entire dialog and when finished press Enter.
  11. When prompted with "What country is this system in?", in the second Configuring Isdnlog dialog, select the appropriate ISO two-letter code for your country or other using the arrow keys and press Enter
  12. When prompted with "What is your local areacode, if applicable?", in the third Configuring Isdnlog dialog, leave blank and press Enter.
  13. Type "dpkg -i conf-isdn-account_1.6-1_all.deb" (without quotation narks) and press Enter

Configuring ISDN

  1. Select Launch | Applications | System | config isdn, the program conf-isdn-account starts with a main menu (use the arrow keys to select different menu items)
  2. Configuring ISDN Card

  3. Select HiSax ISDN cards and press Enter while the OK button is highlighted (To switch between OK and Cancel use the Tab key) Note: Many ISDN cards (for example Teles, AVM, ELSA, etc) use the HiSax driver
  4. Find your ISDN card (using the up and down arrow keys) and press Enter
  5. A dialog will appear informing you of the required parameters: IRQ, IO, etc, and press Enter
  6. Select the ISDN protocol (Note:use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate protocol and the spacebar to select it) and press Enter
  7. Continue entering the required parameters
  8. Configuring ISDN Configuration Type

  9. From the main menu, highlight Create new configuration and press Enter
  10. Type an arbitrary name, (for example, Internet), for configuration name and press Enter
  11. Select (using arrow keys to highlight and the space bar to select) the configuration type. If you are configuring a connection with your ISP, select Internet Service Provider from the list
  12. The following steps are for the configuration type, Internet Service Provider

  13. When prompted for "Your MSN/EAZ", type your own ISDN telephone number and press Enter
  14. When prompted for "Areacode of Telephone numbers to call", type the areacode of the telephone numbers your computer must call to create an ISDN PPP link and press Enter.
  15. When prompted for "Telephone numbers to call", type the telephone numbers your computer must call to create an ISDN PPP link (Note: Your ISP can have more than one ISDN telephone number and in this field you can enter all of the telephone numbers, separated by spaces) and press Enter
  16. When prompted for "Dynamic IP", select either Yes or No (most ISP's use dynamic IP addresses) and press Enter
  17. When prompted "Some ISP's require a dummy remote", press Enter
  18. When prompted for "Remote PPP IP address", type the IP-addressn that was assigned to you by your ISP and press Enter
  19. When prompted for "Hostname for your PPP IP", type the hostname for your PPP IP (Note: You will only be asked to enter this field, if the IP address that you entered in the field Your PPP IP address, does not exists in /etc/hosts. If you have chosen an IP address from the set 192.168.X.X, you can enter here an arbitrary name - for example, linux1) and press Enter
  20. When prompted for "Hostname for remote PPP IP", type the hostname for the remote PPP IP (Note: You will only be asked to enter this field, if the IP address that you entered in the field Remote PPP IP address, doe not exist in /etc/hosts. If you have chosen an IP address from the set 192.168.X.X, you can enter here an arbitrary name - for example, remotesystem) and press Enter
  21. When prompted for "Loginname", type the login name provided to you by your ISP and press Enter
  22. When prompted for "Password", type the password provided to you by your ISP and press Enter
  23. When prompted for "Dial mode", press Enter (the recommended mode is Manual - You have to select Dial/Hangup from the main menu to start dialing into another system)
  24. When prompted for "IP address(es) domain name server(s)", leave this field empty and press Enter (Most ISPs send these addresses automatically when you make a connection)
  25. When prompted for "Firewall", press Enter (the recommendation is to enable firewall to protect against hacking from the Internet and this enabling this option has no known disadventages)
  26. When prompted with "Local Area Network Interface detected !", press Enter (You will only be prompted with this message if your computer is equipped with a configured network card)
  27. When prompted with "Configure as router during connection", select either Yes or No and press Enter
  28. When prompted with the "Configuration" summary dialog for a local area network, press Enter
  29. When prompted for "Channel Bundling", select Yes or No and press Enter (selecting Yes, a maximum of two telephone lines will be used to obtain a maximum connection speed of 128 kb - your provider has to support the MPPP protocol to make this possible)
  30. When prompted to "Save new configuration?", Yes is selected by default and press Enter (A configuration with missing information cannot be saved and the missing information will be indicated in a list by question mark)
  31. After saving the configuration, there is a check to determine if a default configuration exist. If one does not exist, you will be prompted to make the new configuration the default.
  32. When prompted with the final "Configuration" dialog with only an OK button", press Enter

Start ISDN Connection

  1. Select Launch | Applications | System | config isdn
  2. In the main menu highlight "Dial/Hangup interface" and press Enter
  3. From the list, select the connection
