Digital Camera Support - using GPhoto2

Download files:

  1. Point your Web browser to http://support.xandros.com/downloads/cameras/
  2. Download the below files onto your local folder:
    gphoto2_2.1.1-3xandros1_i386.deb
    libcdk4_4.9.9-3_i386.deb
    libexif8_0.5.9-4xandros1_i386.deb
    libgphoto2-2_2.1.2dev11.x.1-1_i386.deb
    libgphoto2-port0_2.1.2dev11.x.1-1_i386.deb
    libusb-0.1-4_0.1.7-1_i386.deb
    usb-perms_0.1-3_i386.deb

Remove any previously installed versions of the gphoto2 package:

Note: You'll need to apply this process if you have a version of gphoto2 previously installed on your system.

  1. Select Launch | Applications | System | Administrator Tools | Console (Administrator)
  2. Enter administrator password when prompt
  3. Type "dpkg --purge gtkam gphoto2" (without quotation marks) and press Enter

Install .DEB files:

  1. Select Launch | Applications | System | Administrator Tools | Console (Administrator)
  2. Enter administrator password when prompt
  3. Change your present working directory to where you've downloaded the .DEB files
  4. Type "dpkg -i libusb-0.1-4_0.1.7-1_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  5. Type "dpkg -i libexif8_0.5.9-4xandros1_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  6. Type "dpkg -i libgphoto2-port0_2.1.2dev11.x.1-1_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  7. Type "dpkg -i libgphoto2-2_2.1.2dev11.x.1-1_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  8. Type "dpkg -i libcdk4_4.9.9-3_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  9. Type "dpkg -i gphoto2_2.1.1-3xandros1_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  10. Type "dpkg -i usb-perms_0.1-3_i386.deb" (without quotation marks) and press Enter

Install a GUI to use gphoto:

  1. Select Launch | Applications | System | Administrator Tools | Xandros Update
  2. Enter administrator password when prompt
  3. Select Edit | Set Package Sources
  4. Select the Custom Path(s) checkbox and the checkbox for the item below:
    deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free
  5. Click OK
  6. Select File | Update Package List
  7. Select Available Software tab
  8. Select Edit | Find
  9. Type "gtkam" (without quotation marks) and click Ok
  10. Click the dot/circle beside the package name, gtkam (a monitor with a green arrow will appear)
  11. Select File | Upgrade / Install / Remove Packages
  12. Click Ok
  13. Click OK when the installation has completed
  14. Click Ok
    Note: Change the Package Sources back to the original settings by selecting Edit | Set Package Sources.
  15. Select File | Quit to Exit Xandros Update

USB permissions:

With the current configuration, only the administrator user can access the camera. If you want to access it as a normal user, you will need to configure the usb permissions daemon.

  1. Log in as administrator (root)
  2. Make sure the camera is connected to the USB port and is turned ON
  3. Select Launch | Applications | System | Console
  4. Type "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  5. You should get output consisting below lines:
    P: Vendor=040a ProdID=0550 Rev= 1.00
    S: Manufacturer=Eastman Kodak Company
    S: Product=KODAK DX4900 Zoom Digital Camera
  6. Open the file, /etc/usb.permissions in any text editor
  7. Add a similar line to the bottom:
    040a 0550 0664 44
    Replacing the 040a and 0550 with the vendor id and product id for your camera listed in the output from the previous step.
  8. Save the file and close the text editor
  9. Type "/etc/init.d/usb-perms restart" (without quotation marks) and press Enter
  10. Logout

Running gtkam:

  1. Log in as a "regular" user
  2. Select Launch | Applications | Viewers | gtkam
  3. If your camera is not automatically detected (no camera set), select Camera | Select Camera
  4. Click Detect, the camera model should appear if it is supported
  5. Click OK

Note: An entry representing the camera should appear in the left window.
